YOUR CALENDARS! - APRIL 24TH -
On Thursday, April
24th, rising 6th graders that are in our attendance zone
will come to Chewning from 10 am - 12:30 pm to
participate in a "Making the Grade in Middle School"
transition program. Students will participate in
multiple sessions concerning the academic and social
challenges of moving to middle school. The kids
will also be treated to lunch and entertainment from our
magician.
On the evening of the
24th, from 5:30 to 7:30, we will host a 6th Grade Expo
and Family Fun Night in the large gym. At this event,
all of our courses and special programs will be on
display for parents of rising 6th graders. The event
will have a "street fair" atmosphere with food, music,
entertainment for kids, large inflatables, games, face
painting, etc.) door prizes and much more.

Progress Reports
Site-based decision making
committees at each school determine
how student progress will be
communicated. In some schools,
portfolios or weekly folders with
work samples are sent home. Schools
also may choose to send home a more
formal report at the midpoint of the
grading period. The schedule for
issuing progress reports for 2007-08

PTSA Job Descriptions
· President
– The president is responsible for overseeing and
administering all PTSA meetings to include the Executive
Board Meetings and General Membership Meetings. This
includes ensuring that agendas are prepared and distributed
prior to the meeting; keeping the meeting on track; opening
items for discussion and calling for votes as needed. The
president should delegate duties to committee heads and
other officers and is responsible for staying on top of
items voted on to ensure completion in a timely manner.
There are usually 4-5 General Membership meetings and one
Executive Board Meeting each month from August through May.
There is a planning session that takes place in June or July
to prepare for the opening of school. The president
generally has signature power for funds disbursement. Time
commitment: 2-3 hours/month.
· President-elect
– This person must commit to a 2-year term. The first year,
he/she shadows the president learning the by-laws and how to
effectively manage meetings and protocol. The second year,
the person automatically assumes the President’s position.
This person may assist in this execution of projects
approved by the PTSA. This person also has signature power
for funds disbursement. Time commitment: 2-3 hours/month.
· Vice
President – This person has the fund raising committee
report to him/her. Working with the fund raising committee,
the VP will help select the fund raising programs and offer
support as needed. The VP also works with the teacher
coordinating the National Junior Honor Society Induction in
the spring. Time commitment: 2-3 hours/month.
· Treasurer
– This person is responsible for maintaining all final
records. He/she will prepare a financial report for all
Executive Board and General Membership meetings. He/she
works with the other board members to develop and present
the annual PTSA budget. He/she prepares checks for
disbursement of funds and secures the necessary signatures.
He/she balances bank statements and maintains accurate
records that can be turned over for audit once a year. Time
commitment: 3-4 hours/month.
· Secretary
– This person is responsible for recording minutes from all
PTSA meetings. The minutes must be typed and submitted for
approval at each Executive Board Meeting. Minutes must
include people in attendance and a summary of key points
discussed. When votes are takes notation of a first and
second motion as well as the outcome of the vote must be
recorded. The secretary is also responsible for collecting
and compiling information for a quarterly newsletter. Time
commitment: 1-2 hours/month.
Committee Positions Appointed
· Hospitality
– This committee is responsible for hosting several lunches,
breakfasts or specialty snacks throughout the year.
Typically, the events include: a new year kick-off breakfast
for staff before school starts; a lunch/specialty snack at
least once a quarter; the teacher appreciation week
luncheon; bus driver/janitorial staff appreciation; and
refreshments for all PTSA General Membership meetings. Time
commitment: 2-3 hours/event.
· Honorarium
– This committee coordinates a pizza lunch for all A and A/B
Honor Roll students for the first 3 quarters of school. The
students are treated to pizza, salad, drinks and dessert for
their academic success. This committee also prepares
certificates that are given out by their teachers. Time
commitment: 4-5 hours per quarter (all at one time)

Membership –
This committee is responsible for signing up new PTSA
members, providing membership cards to new members,
maintaining a master membership list, and submitting the
required membership dues paperwork to the state. Time
commitment: 3-4 hours in first few months of school but then
drops to almost none after October.

Fund Raising –
This committee takes the responsibility for raising funds to
support academic programs and student events not funded
through the school system. The main fundraiser takes place
in August and depending on its success, the committee
decides what other programs might be successful. This
committee also handles the coordination of the Family Fun
Day in the fall; sportswear sales; Chewning Nights Out at
local restaurants. Time commitment: 10-15 hours per event.

Beautification
– This committee works to improve the overall appearance of
the school through clean up days and landscaping projects.
Time commitment: 2-3 hours per project.
